Programs
GHDSA's programs are open to persons with Physical Disabilities. All
programs run from September to June at various venues around the Burlington
- Oakville area.
If you know someone who may be interested in joining our organization,
please contact us for more information.
Our programs are run by volunteers who are committed to helping our athletes
to reach their personal athletic goals.
Yearly membership fees are currently set at $150 per person (or a maximum of
$300 per family). Membership fees are used to help GHDSA cover costs such
as: facility rentals, equipment purchases and maintenance, and event
registrations. Membership entitles athletes to participate in as many of our
programs as they wish.
Competitions in all sports are held at the regional, provincial, national,
and international levels, depending on an athlete's skill level and personal
interests.
- Athletics - Track and Field
Athletes can participate in Ambulatory and Wheelchair events including:
Track, Jumping, and Throwing. Our weekly Athletics program is designed to
help athletes improve their strength and flexibility and develop their
skills in the events that interest them.
- Boccia
Boccia athletes either throw, kick, or use an assistive device to propel
leather balls as close as possible to a small white ball which serves as the
target. Players may compete individually or as a team and the games are
played indoors on a smooth, flat surface. Boccia is ideal for athletes with
more severe physical disabilities.
- Swimming
Swim practices are supervised by certified lifeguards and volunteers are
available to help athletes interested in improving their skills. Athletes
requiring a higher degree of assistance are expected to make their own
arrangements, such as having a friend or family member in the water with them.
- Wheelchair Basketball
The rules in Wheelchair Basketball are very much the same as able-bodied
basketball. A unique player classification system means that both disabled
and able-bodied athletes are able to participate together. Weekly practices
focus on skills development and also help athletes get used to playing in a
game situation. Junior and Adult programs are available.
